What a DRPS CT physics evaluation covers
A DRPS board-certified medical physicist evaluates the scanner itself, not only the images it produces:
- Dose. CTDIvol is measured and compared with the value the scanner displays, DLP adds scan length, and size-specific dose estimates (SSDE) adjust CTDIvol for patient size.
- Image quality. Phantom testing, including the ACR CT accreditation phantom used for accreditation submissions, checks CT number accuracy, slice thickness, low-contrast resolution, uniformity and high-contrast spatial resolution.
- Protocols. Adult and pediatric protocols are reviewed against the facility's dose notification and alert values where it uses them, so dose stays as low as reasonably achievable without losing diagnostic quality.
- Report. A written report from a qualified medical physicist documents the results for accreditation, state and Joint Commission files.
Accreditation and regulatory drivers
The ACR CT Accreditation Program combines three elements: a clinical image review, a phantom image review, and an annual system performance evaluation by a qualified medical physicist whose signed summary is submitted. The Joint Commission's hospital standards likewise call for an annual CT performance evaluation and an annual CTDIvol check by a diagnostic medical physicist. DRPS physicists support both, and the results feed the facility's dose-optimization program.
