Biography
Mr. Robert Wellnitz holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, with a concentration in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety. With over two decades of experience in research and clinical radiation safety, Mr. Wellnitz has established a distinguished career supporting complex healthcare and academic institutions.
He began his professional journey in 2004 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) as a Hazardous Materials Assistant, where he developed foundational expertise in managing chemical, biological, and radiological hazards across laboratory and clinical environments. In 2008, he joined the UMB Radiation Safety Department, where he has since taken on increasing leadership responsibilities, including serving as Assistant Radiation Safety Officer and Acting Radiation Safety Officer.
Mr. Wellnitz has extensive experience in regulatory compliance, radiation safety training, and quality assurance testing of diagnostic imaging equipment, including fluoroscopy, CT, and general radiography units. He has played a critical role in enhancing institutional radiation protection programs, ensuring compliance with NRC and state regulations, and fostering a strong safety culture throughout UMB and UMMC.
Known for his practical, solutions-oriented approach, Mr. Wellnitz is a trusted expert in health physics operations.
